Foundation for Shared Impact (FSI) team delivered an NGO Board Director Training Program on Saturday, 26 October, at The Executive Centre (TEC) in Quarry Bay for Hub for the Future members as well as HSBC employees. A total number of 23 HSBC Scholars participated in the training program along with 12 HSBC colleagues.
The NGO Board Director Training Program covered comprehensive topics related to board roles and responsibilities within an organization, including the qualities of effective boards and introductory concepts in corporate governance. Additionally, the training addressed legal and compliance as well as risk management issues faced by NGOs in Hong Kong, while highlighting how FSI’s rich library of resources can help NGO board members navigate these challenges.
David Bishop, an Associate Professor of Teaching at the HKU Business School and co-founder of FSI, delivered the workshop citing thought-provoking case studies such as the controversial Silicon Valley startup, Theranos, prompting participants to critically reflect on the importance of good governance and a well-managed board.
During the networking lunch, HSBC executives interacted with HSBC Scholars and shared their board experiences.
Some learning and feedback from participants included:
“In-depth explanation on board directors through dissecting cases.” – Hei Yin Wong, HSBC Scholar.
“I learned that a competent board director should be curious at all times.” – James Wai Bong, HSBC Scholar.
“ Judgement matters – structural remedies can only do so much.” – Dorothy Chan, HSBC’s Head of Philanthropy Services and Advisory.
