FAQs
FSI is a Section 88 tax-exempt charity registered in Hong Kong and an incubator for social businesses to grow and thrive. It is an ecosystem where the impact of existing social businesses is maximized, so that new social businesses can emerge more easily, stand on steadier ground, and create further impact.
Our vision is for a future where everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need to reach their full potential, drive collective social impact and enable society to change for the betterment of all.
Our mission is to address society’s most challenging problems by connecting different sectors to facilitate broad collaboration and free sharing of resources, knowledge, and information to drive systems change, build resilient communities, and change the way we do business for good.
We work with a broad range of stakeholders in society because we believe that lasting systems change is only possible through broad cross-sector collaboration. Amongst our partners and beneficiaries are youth and students, entrepreneurs (especially women entrepreneurs and those from ethnically diverse communities) and innovators, schools and educators, skilled volunteers, social impact leaders, corporate professionals, corporate funders and partners, private funders and donors etc. That’s why we are known as a connector, facilitator, and gap-filler in the Hong Kong social impact space!
The support we provide to our partners and beneficiaries are built into our core programs. Within our communities of social businesses and entrepreneurs, impact-driven youth and educators, skilled professionals and corporate partners, funders and donors, we share resources, knowledge, information, network, financial resources, time, ideas, opportunities and more.

Our drive for collective action for positive change led us to form FSI. Our passion and conviction to intentionally create and share impact spans economic, social, and environmental spheres. For us, impact means building communities that help bring transformational ideas to life, at scale and on a systemic level. Impact also means removing friction for social entrepreneurs so they can amplify their efforts, find passionate collaborators and sustain accelerated change. Learn more about our shared impact philosophy here.
We work with all impact organizations regardless of legal structure. Our philosophy is to support “for-impact” organizations, whether they are “for-profit” or “not-for-profit”.
Although FSI and The University of Hong Kong (HKU) are not directly connected, the two institutions have a close working relationship. FSI was founded by HKU lecturers and students, and initially supported companies founded by HKU students and staff. FSI staff also helps to manage and run the Impact Lab Course (formerly Social Venture Management Internship Course (SVM Course)) out of the HKU Business School (formerly HKU’s Faculty of Business & Economics).
